The reaction starts with the formation of a phenol intermediate that reacts with a nucleophilic reagent (such as water) to form an acidic product and a phosphoric acid ester. The exothermic reaction causes heat production, which can lead to spontaneous combustion if there is insufficient ventilation. Phenyl trifluoromethylsulfone has been shown to be resistant to carbonyl compounds such as benzaldehyde, acetaldehyde and cyclohexanone.
