2-(5-Phenyl-1,3-oxazol-2-yl)benzoic acid (5POA) is a chloride salt that has been used as a luminophore in electronic spectroscopy. It has anomalously low fluorescence emission at 350 nm and a shift in the fluorescence emission maximum to longer wavelengths of 400 nm. The molecule can be considered to be unsymmetrical due to the presence of two different electron-donating groups, which causes the electronic spectra to have an asymmetric shape. The molecule also has a conformation that is sterically hindered by the oxadiazole group and this steric hindrance causes an increase in the wavelength of the fluorescence emission.
