Phaseollin is a plant protein that is found in the seeds of the chenopodium plant. It is a potent inducer of the signal peptide, which is a type of protein that directs newly synthesized proteins to their destination organelle. Phaseollin has been shown to be structurally similar to other seed storage proteins and has been reported to have enzyme activities. This binding prevents the binding of other enzymes or proteins, blocking transcription and translation. Phaseolin also contains disulfide bonds, which are necessary for proper functioning. The absence of these bonds can lead to improper folding and malfunctioning of the protein as well as decreased stability in different environments. Phaseolin can also be broken down by heat or water vapor, so it should be stored at low temperatures with minimal exposure to either one.
