Piperaquine phosphate is an orally administered drug that belongs to the group of piperazine-containing drugs. It is used to treat malaria, as well as other parasitic diseases such as toxoplasmosis and amebiasis. Piperaquine phosphate has been shown to be effective in humans with pernicious anemia and dysphagia due to its ability to increase the efficiency of the body's response to mannose. The drug binds with high affinity to phosphates in the body, preventing it from being excreted in urine. This results in increased retention of mannose, which can then be utilized by the body for its own purposes. Piperaquine phosphate is also a substrate for hydrolysis by trisaccharide enzymes, which leads to release of piperazine and piperaquine. Piperaquine phosphate does not bind well with sorbitol or mannose, so these compounds do not interfere with its efficacy.
