Platinum(II)bromide is a chemical compound that is used in analytical chemistry. It has a redox potential of 1.8 volts and reacts with water vapor to form hydrogen bromide and oxygen gas. Platinum(II)bromide also exhibits an NMR spectrum that can be used to identify other compounds by the presence of peaks corresponding to different functional groups. The reaction solution may contain palladium complexes, which are able to reduce nitrite ions into ammonia gas and nitric oxide gas. This reaction produces cytotoxic products such as hydrogen cyanide, cyanogen chloride, dinitrogen tetroxide, nitrous acid, and nitrogen dioxide. Platinum(II) bromide is also capable of reacting with light emission to produce heat energy and activation energies for chemical reactions.
