Pyrrolidine-3,4-dicarboxylic acid is a molecule that is found in many living organisms. It is an important intermediate in the synthesis of neurotransmitters, such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and other compounds. The metal ion has been shown to be a ligand for the enzyme glutamate decarboxylase. Pyrrolidine-3,4-dicarboxylic acid has also been shown to have antioxidant properties and may have potential use in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Structural analysis has revealed that pyrrolidine-3,4-dicarboxylic acid contains a reactive redox potential as well as sodium salts on its molecule.
