It is a nucleophilic agent that inhibits the activity of histone deacetylases (HDACs). 2-Phenyl-malononitrile binds to the zinc ion in the active site of HDACs, preventing them from catalyzing the removal of acetyl groups from lysine residues on histones and other proteins.
