1H-Phenalene is an epidermal growth factor (EGF) analogue. It has been shown to stimulate the growth of cultured cells and, therefore, may have potential as a therapeutic agent in cancer treatment. 1H-Phenalene binds to the receptor for EGF with high affinity and specificity. This binding leads to activation of downstream signaling pathways that stimulate cell proliferation. The synthetic retinoids are structurally related compounds that are used in the treatment of skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, and vitiligo. These compounds are thought to induce changes in gene expression by altering the transcriptional machinery of target cells. One of these compounds is isotretinoin which is used to treat severe acne vulgaris.
1H-Phenalene also inhibits tumor growth by binding to mt2 receptors on tumor cells and activating caspases which lead to apoptosis or cell death.END>>
