It is used as a coating material for medical devices and other products, such as contact lenses and intraocular lenses, because it is transparent and nontoxic. Poly(ethyl methacrylate) has been shown to have good water permeability and can be used in the manufacture of contact lenses. This polymer also has a phase transition temperature of about 32 °C and can be used in applications where heat resistance is needed.
