It is also known as cresols, which are a group of phenols and esters of phenol with aliphatic or aromatic alcohols. 2-Phenoxypropanol can be synthesized by reacting hexanoic anhydride with formaldehyde, followed by hydrolysis of the resulting acetal. 2-Phenoxypropanol has been shown to inhibit lipase activity and also has toxic properties in animal studies. It is capable of forming hydrogen bonds with amino acid residues and possesses acyl chains that are ideal for molecular modeling studies.
