• Beschreibung: Purpurin 18 is a choroidal neovascularization inhibitor that binds to ABCG2, an efflux pump protein in the blood-brain barrier. This binding prevents efflux of the drug, which leads to inhibition of ABCG2-mediated transport of hydrophobic drugs and xenobiotics out of cells. Purpurin 18 has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in vivo by a mechanism that may involve inhibition of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) production. Purpurin 18 also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used for the treatment of alopecia areata. The anti-inflammatory effects are probably caused by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis and induction of apoptosis in activated T cells. The uptake of purpurin 18 into cells is mediated by an acidic environment as well as its hydroxyl group, which provides it with a hydrophobic effect. Purpurin 18 also disrupts mitochondrial membrane potential, leading to cell death.
