Peretinoin is a synthetic retinoid that has been shown to inhibit the growth of hepatocellular carcinoma cells. It inhibits the cyclin D2-CDK4/6 complex and alters the cell cycle in such a way that it induces autophagy, which is a process by which cells degrade their own cellular components. Peretinoin also inhibits toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), which is involved in inflammatory responses to bacterial infections. Peretinoin has been shown to inhibit energy metabolism, leading to reduced ATP levels, and has been shown to induce apoptosis through caspase activation.
