Piperonyl butoxide is a synergist that increases the toxicity of pesticides. It has been shown to have toxic effects on locomotor activity and enzyme activities, including p450 activity. Piperonyl butoxide has also been found to affect the ryanodine receptor, which is an ion channel in muscle cells that regulates calcium levels. This chemical has been shown to produce significant toxic effects in experimental models. Acute toxicity studies have shown that piperonyl butoxide can cause death at high doses, as well as potentially causing liver and kidney damage.
