It functions as a corrosion inhibitor by binding to the metal surface and converting the chloride ion to hydrogen chloride, which is less corrosive. L-Phenylalanine methyl ester hydrochloride also inhibits protein synthesis by inhibiting the activity of hepg2 cells.
