Phenmedipham-ethyl is a synthetic insecticide that belongs to the phenmedipham family of compounds. It is used in pest control as an oral, hepatic drug. Phenmedipham-ethyl inhibits the growth of organisms by binding to sulfhydryl groups and blocking protein synthesis. The chemical reacts with sulfate and glucuronide to form water-soluble metabolites that are then excreted in urine and feces. Phenmedipham-ethyl is metabolized by hydrolysis, which cleaves the methyl group from the aromatic ring, leading to metabolism into unidentified products. Posttreatment with this drug leads to the formation of vitro metabolites that may be responsible for its toxicity in rats.
