4-Phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine hydrochloride (4PHTP) is a compound that is used as a precursor for the synthesis of L-DOPA. 4PHTP is converted to L-DOPA by aromatic amino acid decarboxylase in the brain. The drug has been shown to be effective in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and other conditions related to dopamine deficiency. 4PHTP has also been found to be effective in monitoring dopaminergic function and may be useful in studying the neural basis of motor control. 4PHTP has been shown to have a crystal structure that closely resembles that of dopamine and binds to the same receptors as dopamine. This drug is also known as alpha-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine monohydrate.
