It has been shown to be toxic to animals at high doses and has photochemical properties that make it useful in vitro assays. 1-Phenylpyrazole has been found to be a liver carcinogen in rats and mice, although it is not believed to be carcinogenic in humans. The presence of the pyrazole ring may also contribute to its anti-inflammatory activity. 1-Phenylpyrazole can also bind fluorine, picolinic acid, ethyl formate, and human liver cancer cells. Studies have shown that 1-phenylpyrazole inhibits herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) replication in vitro and blocks binding of the ryanodine receptor to calcium ions.
