• Beschreibung: Propionylcarnitine chloride is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to propionyl-l-carnitine, its active form. Propionylcarnitine chloride has been shown to improve the activity of propionyl-l-carnitine in patients with bowel disease, congestive heart failure and other conditions. It binds to the carboxyl group of propionyl-CoA and inhibits carnitine biosynthesis by inhibiting the enzyme carnitine acetyltransferase. Propionylcarnitine chloride is also used as a diagnostic agent for muscle diseases because it can be detected in erythrocytes and plasma. The diagnosis can be confirmed by measuring the concentration of carnitine in blood samples from different body parts (e.g., trigeminal nerve).
