4-n-Propylpyridine is a reactive chemical that is used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, herbicides, and other organic compounds. It can be obtained by the reaction of sodium formate with carbon tetrachloride in the presence of chloride ion. 4-n-Propylpyridine has bacteriostatic activity and inhibits bacterial cell growth by reacting with transition metal ions, such as magnesium. This interaction may be due to its ability to alkylate these metals. 4-n-Propylpyridine also reacts with peroxide and forms an antibacterial compound that can react with DNA and RNA molecules.
