The polymer is also biocompatible, with no cytotoxicity or hemolysis. Poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid-co-3-hydroxyvaleric acid) was synthesized by ring opening polymerization of 3-hydroxybutyric acid and 3-hydroxyvaleric acid. The polymer has shown synergistic effects when used in combination with other polymers, such as polyvinyl alcohol. Poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid-co-3-hydroxyvaleric acid) can be used in tissue culture as a scaffold for the growth of animal cells.
