Pyruvic acid is a natural compound that is found in the cell nuclei and is an important component of energy metabolism. Pyruvic acid has been shown to be a component of complex enzymes like pyruvate dehydrogenase, which converts pyruvic acid into pyruvate. The sodium salt of pyruvic acid has been used as a drug for bowel disease, but it also has biochemical properties that may be useful in treating mitochondrial membrane potential and DNA binding activity.
