The phosphate group provides a negative charge that can interact with calcium ions, which are essential for many cellular processes. This protein also binds epidermal growth factor (EGF), which promotes cell proliferation and differentiation, and glutamate, which is a neurotransmitter. O-Phospho-L-serine has been used to produce expression plasmids containing EGF or glutamate receptors. O-Phospho-L-serine has also been shown to have neuroprotective properties in animal models of Parkinson's disease.
