2-Phenylbenzylamine Hydrochloride is a synthetic inhibitor that binds to the active site of the human enzyme, DPP-4. This drug has been shown to increase GLP-1 levels in animal models and may be used for the treatment of diabetes. 2-Phenylbenzylamine Hydrochloride is structurally similar to benzimidazole derivatives, which are known inhibitors of the bacterial enzyme glycogen phosphorylase kinase (GPK). These compounds have also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and inhibit the production of hydrogen peroxide in dpp-4 knockout mice. The molecule was designed as a potential treatment for type 2 diabetes by inhibiting DPP-4, an enzyme that degrades GLP-1, which stimulates insulin release and reduces blood glucose levels.
