Phenylthiomethyltrimethylsilane reacts with anions to form salts, such as copper(II)sulfate. This compound does not react with unreactive compounds, such as phenols or amines. The redox potential for this compound is +0.3 volts and it undergoes disulfide exchange reactions in the presence of hydrogen sulfide. The nucleophilic nature of Phenylthiomethyltrimethylsilane enables it to act as an alkylating agent on thiol-containing molecules and other nucleophiles.
