The reaction mechanism of phenylthioacetic acid involves the loss of hydrogen sulfide, which occurs by an addition-elimination reaction with hydroxide ions. Phenylthioacetic acid also has antihypertensive activity and inhibits malonic acid synthesis in the mitochondria by blocking the oxidation of malonyl-CoA. This drug binds to human serum albumin and consequently has a low therapeutic index, making it unsuitable for use in patients with liver or kidney disease.
