It is used as an industrial solvent for degreasing metal parts and dissolves fats and oils. 1,1,1,2,3-Pentachloro-2-fluoropropane also has the ability to solubilize inorganic salts such as calcium fluoride. This chemical has been shown to be toxic to humans when inhaled or ingested. When this chemical is released into the environment it reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form products such as hydrochloric acid and hydrogen fluoride.
