Pentafluorophenyl isothiocyanate (PFITC) is a fluorescent dye that can be used to measure protein synthesis and to study the effects of autoimmune diseases on blood cells. PFITC binds to proteins in the cell membrane, which alters the electrical potential across the membrane, leading to changes in voltage-dependent ion channels. These changes are measured using ionization techniques and can be used as a measure of protein synthesis. This technique has been shown to be effective in humans and animals with chronic exposure. PFITC has also been shown to bind to proteins in cancer cells, which may lead to new treatments for cancer patients.
