• Beschreibung: Racemic propranolol is a beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist that can be used to treat hypertension, angina and arrhythmias. It is also used as an anti-hypertensive agent for the treatment of congestive heart failure and myocardial infarction. Propranolol inhibits the enzyme cytochrome P450 in the liver microsomes, which reduces the rate of metabolism of other drugs such as quinidine and naphthalene, leading to increased concentrations of these drugs in plasma. Racemic propranolol is metabolized by the enzyme o-deethylase (CYP1A2) to its active form, R(-)-propranolol. Rac-propranolol has been shown to inhibit biliary excretion of radioactive substances such as 7-hydroxy propranolol in rats.
