D-Serine methyl ester HCl is an amide that is used as an intermediate in the preparation of lacosamide, an antiepileptic drug. It is prepared by methylation of D-serine with methanol. This reaction can be carried out under neutral or basic conditions and produces the same product. The synthetic route starts with the reaction of thionyl chloride with l-glutamic acid to afford the corresponding acid chloride, which can then be reacted with methanol to give a mixture of stereoisomers. The methyl esters hydrochloride salt is also available commercially, although it is less expensive to synthesize this compound from recycled starting materials. In mammalian cells, D-serine methyl ester HCl inhibits actin filament assembly by binding to actin monomers and inhibiting their polymerization into filaments.
