β-sitosterol is a plant sterol that has been shown to have hypoglycemic effects in experimental animals. β-sitosterol can prevent the formation of cholesterol from acetyl coenzyme A and inhibit the activity of hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase, an enzyme involved in the production of cholesterol. It also inhibits carboxylesterases, which are enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of phospholipids in biological membranes. In addition, β-sitosterol interacts with p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which is a metabolite produced during lipid peroxidation reactions associated with inflammation and oxidative stress. β-sitosterol also inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential and Toll-like receptor signaling pathways. This molecule has been shown to be effective against solid tumours and mitochondria in cancer cells. It has also been shown to have significant activity against pandemic influenza virus and signal pathways involved in its replication. β-Sit
