Sodium (Z)-2-cyano-2-phenylethylenolate is an inhibitor that belongs to the class of pyrazole derivatives. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to their DNA, thereby preventing transcription and replication. Sodium (Z)-2-cyano-2-phenylethylenolate has been shown to be active against chronic bronchitis and tuberculosis. It also has a fluorescence property, which makes it a useful molecule for the detection of DNA in living cells. Sodium (Z)-2-cyano-2-phenylethylenolate is synthesized from the reaction of 2-(chloromethyl)benzothiazole with piperidine, followed by acid catalyzed condensation with malononitrile. This compound has been shown to inhibit compounds that contain an alkylsulfonyl group.
