Schinifoline is a water-soluble compound that belongs to the group of enzyme inhibitors. It inhibits signal pathways and may be an anticancer drug. Schinifoline has been shown to inhibit growth of prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, as well as autophagy in the prostate cancer cells. The compound has also been shown to inhibit proliferation of autologous fibroblast cells, which suggests that it has potential for use as a topical anti-inflammatory agent. Schinifoline was found to have no effect on epidermal growth factor (EGF) production by normal human keratinocytes or EGF receptor expression by these cells, suggesting that it is not a tyrosine kinase inhibitor.
