Methanethiol inhibits the growth of microorganisms by binding to metal ions on the surface of cells. This prevents DNA replication and protein synthesis, leading to cell death. Methanethiol also has anti-inflammatory properties which may be due to its ability to inhibit adenosine A1 receptor activity in humans.
