Beschreibung

Satranidazole is a triazole compound that has been used in the treatment of amoebic infections. It has been shown to have an effective anti-amoebicidal activity against Entamoeba histolytica and other amoebae. Satranidazole also has a high degree of specificity for chitin, which is found in cell walls of fungi and protozoa, but not in mammalian cells. This antibiotic has been shown to be highly toxic to cells and it is thought that this toxicity may be due to inhibition of protein synthesis by deamination (replacement of amino groups with nitro groups) or modification of DNA by direct interaction. The use of satranidazole can lead to formation of diazonium salts, which are carcinogens.
