Silica gel is a porous material that has been used for many purposes in the laboratory, including as a desiccant, adsorbent and catalyst. Silica gel is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2) with an average particle size of 2-10 microns. It has a low thermal expansion coefficient and can be easily sterilized by heating or gamma radiation.
