Silica gel is a porous, inorganic material with a particle size of 200-1000um. It is used for the adsorption of non-polar substances such as water and organic solvents, as well as for chromatography. Silica gel has been used in histological analysis to study the properties of peptide hormones. It has also been used as a model system to study biochemical reactions such as those involved in autoimmune diseases and dextran sulfate. Silica gel is also an important component in many discovery groups that are responsible for the development of new drugs.
