• Beschreibung: Sulfamethoxazole is a synthetic bacterostatic antibiotic that is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The antibiotic functions by inhibiting growth by interfering with folic acid synthesis, which bacteria need to synthesise nucleic acids. Sulfamethoxazole competes with para-aminobenzoic acid (structural analog) for binding to the enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase, blocking the production of dihydrofolate that is needed for bacterial folic acid synthesis. Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide that is associated with poor water solubility. Two structural requirements are needed for the antibiotic to function:1) a sulfonamide group2) a free amino group, at positions 1 and 4, respectively.
