Sodium 4-fluorobenzoate is a carboxylate that has been used as an antibacterial in clinical chemistry and clinical use. It has also been used to measure the viscosity of urine samples. Sodium 4-fluorobenzoate has shown effective antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli. It is also effective at high concentrations against other microorganisms with anionic cell walls, such as Mycoplasma.
The FTIR spectroscopy on calf thymus DNA showed that it binds to the phosphate groups on the DNA molecule and inhibits ATPase activity. This binding prevents the production of energy from ATP hydrolysis and leads to bacterial cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
