Scarlet acid is a polycarboxylic acid that has shown to inhibit the transcriptional regulation of various genes in human cervical cancer cells. It also inhibits the methylation of DNA by inhibiting the enzyme, nitrogen atoms. Scarlet acid has been shown to cause oxidative injury in cell cultures and is a potent inhibitor of pentobarbital sodium-induced sleep in mice. The fetal bovine serum used in this study was obtained from pregnant cows slaughtered for food.
