Sodium 1-dodecanesulfonate has been shown to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Citrobacter freundii, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella typhimurium, Campylobacter jejuni and Shigella sonnei. The sodium dodecyl sulfonate molecule binds to phospholipids in bacterial cell membranes by electrostatic interactions with the hydrophilic head group and hydrophobic tail.
