Beschreibung

Skimmin is a drug that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It is used in veterinary medicine to treat infectious diseases such as chronic cough, caused by 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid. Skimmin has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth and transcription of bacterial DNA by binding to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) enzyme. This active form is metabolized through a number of metabolic transformations, including hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, reduction by glutathione reductase, or conjugation with glucuronic acid. Skimmin also specifically binds to markers expressed at high levels in Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains (e.g., ESX-1 secretion system protein) and inhibits cell growth in culture.
