Sarafotoxin 6c binds to the extracellular domain of the endothelin-1 receptor and prevents endothelin-1 from binding, thereby inhibiting its activity. Sarafotoxin 6c has been shown to inhibit the production of intracellular Ca2+ in mesenteric artery cells. Sarafotoxin 6c also inhibits the enzymatic inactivation of endothelin-1 by carboxypeptidases and calpains. Sarafotoxin 6c has been shown to be effective against a number of infectious diseases including myocardial infarction.
