Tetrahydro-2-furoic acid is a disulfide bond that is used in the industrial preparation of methyl ethyl furoate. It has been shown to inhibit the ATP levels in mitochondria and to reduce the activity of methyl malonic acid, a precursor for cellular energy production. Tetrahydro-2-furoic acid was also found to be effective against infectious diseases, such as malaria and tuberculosis, by blocking protein synthesis. This molecule acts as a competitive inhibitor of methionine synthase, which prevents the formation of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), an essential cofactor for protein synthesis. Tetrahydro-2-furoic acid also inhibits growth factor signaling pathways involved in tumor cell proliferation and angiogenesis.
