In this system, thionyl chloride reacts with p-hydroxybenzoic acid to form an intermediate that reacts with chloride ions to produce the desired product. Thionyl chloride has been shown to have receptor activity against inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus type 2 and obesity.
