It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of Gram-positive bacteria (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus) and fungi (e.g., Candida albicans). Treatment with triethyl orthoformate also results in a decrease in platelet aggregation, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme p-nitrophenyl phosphate. This compound was also shown to reduce the incidence of congestive heart failure in rats by increasing cardiac output, resulting from enhanced contractility of the heart muscle cells.
