• Beschreibung: 2,2,6,6-Tetramethyl-4-piperidone 1-oxyl (TEMPO) is a free radical which has been used as a redox catalyst in the synthesis of fatty acids. TEMPO can be applied to tissue culture experiments and has been shown to induce apoptosis in colorectal adenocarcinoma cells. TEMPO is able to permeate membranes and therefore has sublethal effects on cells. It has been shown that TEMPO is able to reduce the concentration of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in plasma by up to 50%. The chemical structure of TEMPO consists of an aldehyde group and a hydroxyl group on opposite sides of the molecule with an optimum concentration of 10 mM. TEMPO also displays immunomodulatory effects, meaning it can alter the immune system's response to infection or cancer.
