Trifluoperazine is a p-glycoprotein inhibitor that has been shown to inhibit the cytosolic Ca2+ influx in rat brain synaptosomes. It is a drug used as an antipsychotic and is also used to treat depression. The optimum concentration of trifluoperazine varies from 0.5-10 μM, with synergic effects observed at concentrations of 1 μM for many enzymes, including target enzymes such as dopamine β-hydroxylase and tryptophan hydroxylase. Trifluoperazine has also been shown to be an effective agent against opportunistic fungal infections due to its ability to inhibit the production of ergosterol, which is an important component of fungal cell membranes.
