4-(Trifluoromethyl)isatin is an analogue of thiophene. It inhibits the growth of human cells in culture and can be used to study cell cycle regulation. 4-(Trifluoromethyl)isatin is synthesized by a stepwise reaction starting with 4-chloro-5-methylisatin and pivaloylation with propylene oxide followed by azide displacement. This synthesis provides a general scheme for the synthesis of analogues of thiophene. This product has shown antitumor activity against human tumor cells in vitro, which may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA replication and protein synthesis through binding to amines or carbazoles.
