2,3,6-trifluorobenzonitrile is a fluorinating agent that is used as an antibacterial agent. It has been shown to be effective against bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This compound also has bactericidal activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Bacillus subtilis. 2,3,6-trifluorobenzonitrile reacts with the nucleophilic sites on the bacterial cell wall by undergoing sequential nucleophilic substitutions. The chlorine atom's electron affinity makes it a good electrophile for substitution reactions with the nucleophiles found in bacteria. This reaction leaves the bacterial cell wall susceptible to attack by other substances such as cyanide or fluoride ions which are able to react with the chloride ion left behind from the first reaction. Fluoride ions are also able to react with 2,3,6-trifluorobenzonitrile to form
