(-)-Tephrosin is a quinone with potent antitumor activity. It has been shown to inhibit the mitochondrial membrane potential, which is important for the production of ATP in cells. (-)-Tephrosin also inhibits signal pathways and transcriptional regulation, which are involved in cell proliferation and tumor growth. The mechanism of (-)-tephrosin's antitumor activity is not yet known, but it has been shown to be active against skin cancer cells and Hl-60 cells. This drug also has diagnostic properties as it can be used to detect changes in the mitochondrial membrane potential. (-)-Tephrosin is stable at pH levels between 3-4 and does not react with sodium carbonate or biological fluids such as serum or urine. In plant physiology, (-)-tephrosin has been shown to have toxic effects on plants by inhibiting photosynthesis.
